Chapter 9 Dru

THE PLAN

“Ah, can someone please explain that to me?” We turn to see my mother pointing at Beast, her mouth hanging open in humorous shock.

Or maybe it’s awe, who knows.

“There you are!” Gram scolds, but our new pet doesn’t seem the least bit phased.

Laughter consumes the room as Mom releases her embrace with her twin.

“Darling, sister. Meet our newest house guest, Beast.” Aunt Morgan turns to the bitchin’, white Cougar. “Beast, this is Moira. My twin, and Chloe, Dru, and Dhelia’s, mother.”

She leans down as Beast saunters over, yawning half way there. “Well, aren’t you a handsome boy.” She looks up at me. “Can I pet him?”

“Please do.” I chuckle under my breath. “I’m sure he’ll be pissed if you don’t.”

A muffled growl escapes his massive mouth as he glares at me.

Giggles fill the room.

Mom gets down on her knees, reaching both hands up to Beast’s head. “Wow! I didn’t expect him to be so soft.”

“Isn’t he spectacular?” Dhelia asks.

“To say the least.” She slides her hands to the sides of his face, lifting it gingerly for closer inspection. As their eyes meet, he flashes her the same glowing-blue he did that first night for us. “Oh my!” She gasps. “What have we here?”

“It’s cool, right?” I remember feeling what she is this very second.

“It most certainly is.”

After a few seconds, the magic disappears from his irises, but the two remain fixated on each other.

“What the . . . .” She tilts her head, gazing more deeply into his now ice blue eyes. And then she laughs, reaching down to palm the Moon Family Crest around his neck. “How magnificent.”

She wraps her arms around his thick neck, squeezing him harder than she probably should, considering the size of his teeth. But he lets her—and nuzzles her in return.

“Do you know our Familiar, dear?” Gram asks.

“Oh, you could say our paths have crossed.” She pulls herself away, kissing him on a furry cheek. “But that is a story for another day.”

“I think I know where Beast is sleeping tonight.” Ash laughs.

“So, when did he show up, exactly?” Mom asks, standing up between Gram and me.

“On Christmas Eve, of all nights.” Gram squeezes her shoulder. “Quite the present someone sent us, don’t you think?”

“Present?” Mom smiles. “Interesting. Very interesting, indeed.”
